The changing palates of our children

We are now eight months into our Primal lifestyle and we have dragged our seven and a half year old son kicking and screaming with us.  Whereas our daughter will happily chow down on a bowl of salad laced with sauerkraut, quaff a Kombucha or guzzle down a chia pudding our boy found it hard to let go of the things he had been used to.  'Special Drinks' as we called them were cartons of Juice Juice and I thought that was an ok treat once or twice a week until I read they have the same sugar content as Coco Cola, and you can't unlearn that snippet quickly.

So poor old Sam got to drink water all the time instead.  I was so sure he would like Kombucha that a couple of months ago I bribed him with two bucks to try it.  He practically spat it back in my face.  But a few more tries (unbribed) here and there and now he actually likes it!

The same goes for sourdough, he couldn't stand that, today he ate a slice and asked for another.

The same for my Lollies  - couldn't stand them at first now asks for three at a time.

The same for whole fish, where before he had only liked battered and fried fish he will now sit down to some fish that he caught with his Dad, cooked on the BBQ and picked off the bone.

My point is, don't be deterred or draw a line under foods your kids will and won't eat as their palates change all of the time.  Perhaps have a rule that your child must try a spoonful of what you have made and if they don't like it they don't have to eat it.  Let them know that the next time you make it be it next week or in six months time, that you would like them to have another try of it then too.  And if that fails - bribe em!

When I first started out I had Paleo this for me, Gluten Free stuff for them and Sourdough that for him and it doesn't matter.  Do what works, not everyone is going to like the same things or even tolerate the same foods.  We need to honour the bio individuality even in our own little family.

Sam & I, can you tell we've just had a flash photo shoot? Hoot!
